In the Mood for Love: Reimagining the Music from the Films of Wong Kar Wai
ANALOG/DIALOG is an event series presented in partnership between BOMB Magazine and Ace Hotel Brooklyn.
Each month BOMB invited a pair of artists for a performance and intimate dialogue to explore what inspires them, what challenges them, where they are in their artistic practice, and where they want to go. This edition of ANALOG/DIALOG featured an original mini-suite drawn from the music of legendary Cantonese filmmaker Wong Car Wai, spanning his filmography from Chungking Express and Being Wild to Happy Together to In the Mood for Love. Spearheaded by musicians John Tsung and Ray Suen (Lorde, Childish Gambino), this event utilized a quartet along with vocalists to decontextualize the scores of Wai’s films for our time. This performance was accompanied by a visual reinterpretation of scenes and stills from Wai’s work by visual artist duet MORAKANA.
As the assistant producer for this event, I worked closely with BOMB's Associate Publisher (lead producer), talent, and partners to bring the idea to life.
I coordinated rehearsals, made run of show and call sheet documents, and helped with onsite preparation and deconstruction. This event included nine performers and artists, all of whom I served as a main point of contact for. Similarly, I assisted with communications between our collaborators Ace Hotel Brooklyn and Culture Hub to ensure that we had the equipment and resources that our artists would need. Taking place on February 14, 2022, In the Mood for Love marked a return to in person love and care as it was the first Valentine’s Day since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic that many felt comfortable celebrating in public. That paired with the highlighting of one of China’s great filmmakers through the modes of sound and sight made for a magical event that broadened the scope of BOMB Magazine’s programming capabilities.
